WES STOOD at one end of the barn as Ricky introduced himself and gave an introduction about how things worked at the track. He spotted Evan farther down the barn, at one of the stalls, but then he was gone.
This was as good a time as any. It would be harder later to explain why he needed a private chat with Evan. Wes strode down the barn, reminding himself it had to be this way. Evan had texted back so quickly today, so attentively. It wasn’t fair to drag this out longer.
Wes rehearsed the lines he’d written as he walked slowly toward the stall where he’d seen Evan. “It’s just not the right time for me to make a big move like this. I’m not ready, but if we can be discreet about this, then maybe….”
He stopped outside the stall. He heard the horse moving around restlessly inside. He glanced inside but didn’t see Evan near the door. He couldn’t have gotten out; there was no other exit.
Wes ducked under the webbed barrier and entered the stall. Evan was in the corner, hand on the horse’s neck, back against the wall like he’d been hung on a hook.
“Evan?”
No response.
“Evan? I—”
“Please stop saying my name.” Pain hung on every word, only it was Wes who felt like he’d been stabbed, punched, kicked.
His eyes got used to the dark and he saw Evan’s face more clearly. A sliver of light peeked in from a crack between boards and illuminated part of his face. Wes could hear him breathing, short, shallow breaths. He remembered how Evan’s breath felt against his ear and how he sounded when he slept on Wes’s chest. And how his arms felt when he held tightly to Wes.
Something big and dark clawed at Wes’s heart, and he felt a hole expanding inside him. A hole he hadn’t realized was there, but he knew just how to fill it.
“Evan. God, I missed you so much.” Wes moved toward Evan and gathered him in his arms, holding him tight to his chest. Evan felt limp and boneless, and Wes backed him against the wall again and tried to get a good look at his face.
Wes leaned down and kissed Evan, needing to feel his lips, taste him.
“What?”
“I missed you. I don’t know how I managed to stay away so long.” Wes kissed Evan again, and this time Evan kissed back and put his arms loosely around Wes’s waist. Wes gripped harder, and Evan melted against him.
How could he have even considered not coming back to Evan? Wes felt whole and strong in his arms, strong enough to deflect the comments of people like Lance. Wes pressed Evan tight against the wall and kissed him hard, deep, drawing in his essence as if he needed Evan to breathe.
Outside the stall, he heard Ricky speaking as Wes’s friends filed past. He didn’t let go of Evan, kissed him harder, fortifying himself. The horse nickered and moved to put his head over the stall barrier.
